It’s ‘Appening

In 2014, we made the process of booking flights easier –and fun – with the launch of the new virginamerica.com. Our fresh, award-winning site was the first responsive design airline website in the U.S., giving guests a truly optimized mobile experience, allowing them to quickly and simply book their flights and manage their travel from any device. Today we’re excited to announce we’ll soon be launching the site’s digital successor: our new mobile app.

Before we peek under the hood of our new app, we have to admit that we’ve lagged in delivering this to you. Our guests expect more from their travel experience, which is why we were the first U.S. airline to offer touch-screen entertainment, personal power outlets, mood lighting and WiFi on every flight – a distinction we still hold today. In other words – as anyone who has flown us knows – when we do something, we do it right.  We’re bringing this same approach to our app. And we’re pleased to say that starting this summer, it’s finally “app-ening”.

The Virgin America app, which along with virginamerica.com was co-designed by Brooklyn-based Digital Product Design and Development shop Work & Co, is launching in beta in the coming weeks and to the world later this summer. In 2014, WIRED called the new virginamerica.com experience “super slick” and Fast Company said it “re-imagined how we book travel.” Even more importantly, we heard from our guests that you loved the new site’s unique design and intuitive, fast experience.  The new mobile app will build on our site by offering an engaging and personalized experience for flyers that we hope you’ll agree was worth the wait.

In the coming weeks, select Elevate members and other frequent VX flyers – including a team at one of our top partners, Google – are participating in our beta test for the new app.  If you’d like to take the beta version of our app for a test drive and didn’t yet receive an invite, you can register your interest by signing up here.

Here’s a sneak peek at the new app which will launch for iOS and Android later this summer:

  • Fast & easy:  our app was built to make the travel experience – from booking your mood-lit ride to check-in and beyond – as quick and easy as possible. You can instantly book a flight, check-in, access your mobile boarding pass, receive real-time flight alerts, check your Elevate points balance and more – with just a few taps on the go.
  • Our app gets you: This app isn’t one-size-fits-all. It stores your personal information, including your favorite destination, in order to streamline the user experience and provide personalized flight deals.
  • An app you’ll want to open:  Building on the unique design of virginamerica.com, our app offers a simple, fresh and fun design. Those cheeky avatars from virginamerica.com will be there to guide you along your way.
  • A soundtrack for your journey: Virgin America has always been about more than just getting you from Point A to B. So, we’re furthering our relationship with Spotify for a first-of-its kind trip soundtrack mobile feature on an airline app. Guests can get inspired for their trip by streaming one of the city “Mood Lists” via Spotify. Simply click the Spotify button after you check-in to hear some tunes that will put you in a state-of-mind inspired by your destination.
