A day in the life of a Virgin America intern

When you think of your dream job, does mood lighting come to mind? For a few lucky interns, Virgin America makes that fantasy come to life with summer-long internships within VX Headquarters. In fact, as the Elevate Loyalty Marketing Intern, I’m writing this post under the glow of purple fluorescents in our Marketing Lounge.

While you may think it’s 9-5 dance parties with Sir Richard every day, there’s actually a lot of hard work going on at HQ to seamlessly help people travel in style on the best product in the sky. “Work Hard, Hawaii Hard,” has been the marketing theme of the summer, in preparation for November’s inaugural flight to Honolulu, but it also seems to be the mantra that Virgin America employees embody from day one.

During my internship, I’ve had the opportunity to witness several significant milestones, including the launch of Red® Beta and our unprecedented eighth Travel +  Leisure Top Domestic Airline award, as well as be a part of once-in-an-intern’s-lifetime events, like San Francisco Pride and Virgin America night with the San Francisco Giants. Sound pretty amazing? Yeah, I think so too. Here’s a sneak peek into a typical day in my life:

9:00 a.m. – I arrive at Virgin America HQ, After checking my email, I see if there are any updates in the online focus group I’ve been monitoring. New comments about our Virgin America Visa card? Let me jot that down…

11:00 a.m. – We have our weekly Marketing Meeting where each team gives updates on current projects. With so many launches, promotions and events going on, it’s great to hear what other teams are working on and see how we might be able to help collaborate. Plus, the meeting is held adjacent to a window looking into the nerve center of Virgin America – our Operation Control Center. For a travel nerd, it’s hard not to get a little distracted!

12:30 p.m.  – My fellow interns and I drive down to Burlingame Avenue to have lunch.

3:00 p.m.  – I have a standing afternoon meeting with one of my colleagues on our Loyalty team. Together, we’ve been implementing many updates and it’s amazing that I actually have the opportunity to see the changes!

5:00 p.m. – Time to head home and as strange as it may sound – I can’t wait until I’m back in the office!
